"If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and color, we would find some other causes for prejudice by noon." George Aiken.
For an estimated one-tenth of the population, race, creed, and color only adds on to the discrimination faced every day.

Rochelle Zaranek isn't your average college instructor. While many of us spent our spring break relaxing and enjoying our time away from school, Dr. Zaranek and the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) were in Mississippi and Louisiana helping Hurricane Katrina and Hurrican Rita victims.

With the growing recession and Michigan's employment rate ranking at the lowest of the nation, the last issue on anybody's mind is global affairs, right? Well, for 4 college students from California that is simply not the case.
On Wednesday, April 2, the Invisible Children Great Lakes team visited HFCC to show a screening of Invisible Children's newest documentary "Sunday".

Grandma's lacy underwear

People need to stop and think about the original woman who became our beloved grandmother. What a concept. Can there really have been, a vivacious, adorable, flirtatious, dedicated, intelligent woman encased in the same body that we now perceive as an old biddy, an old bag of bones, simply someone we go to visit on holidays or drag around with us to our relatives?
Mother knows best! Ask your mother! Did you get hurt, or are you in trouble? Need some money in a hurry? Exactly how far have you taken it, how badly have you overlooked the person inside and take advantage of your grandmother instead (or someone else's grandmother, for that matter)? You don't even want to think about it do you?
Do you have any idea of the accomplishments of your grandmother, or the sacrifices, the "against all odds" bad times she has managed to work out and live through, to even be with you today? I pity the person who hasn't sat down with their grandmother and actually "listened" to everything the lady had to say, verbally and non-verbally.

All good things must come to an end including this column. I feel that 'It's not that serious' has run its course and it is time for me to 'hang up the hat'. But before I do, I would like to address one issue: hate mail. About a month ago, I received a letter of disgust.

Life Unscripted

Even in the womb a baby learns the voice of their mother, and when they're brought into a world of strangers they cry for the familiarity of that home they once found within that voice. In a world where people judge you immediately on the color of your skin, your culture, your hair color, your class, education, career, moving to new cities and new schools can be a rough experience for a child.

Not as nerdy as it sounds

It's not as nerdy as it sounds. That's the first thing I was told when I was invited to my first Penguicon in 2006. How could a convention that bills itself as catering to "open source, science fiction, and fantasy" be anything other than nerdy? Because, as I found out, when you bring together over 800 enthusiasts with a dedication to sword fighting, gaming, technology, computers, science fiction, food, drink, and entertainment, amazing things happen.
